Acne Rosacea Affects About 1 In 10 People

Acne rosacea is not true acne, but rather an inflammation of the face, neck or chest that results in red, bumpy, oily skin. Acne rosacea is a chronic acne disorder affecting both the skin and the eye. When the acne and rosacea appear together the result is often called by many names: acne rosacea, rosacea, or adult acne. Patients with rosacea symptoms often have adult acne (acne rosacea) to co-exist with rosacea in approximately 82% of rosacea sufferers and an additional 35% have seborrheic dermatitis which makes for a most delicate rosacea skin condition.

Rosacea

Rosacea affects both sexes, but is almost three times more common in women, and has a peak age of onset between 30 and 60. Rosacea sufferers often report periods of depression stemming from cosmetic disfigurement, painful burning sensations, and decreases in quality of life. Rosacea is more common in fair-skinned than dark-skinned people. Rosacea becomes progressively worse over time if it is left untreated. Rosacea cannot be cured, but it can be controlled.

Skin

Rosacea is a skin disease that affects the middle third of the face, causing persistent redness over the areas of the face and nose that normally blush -- mainly the forehead, the chin and the lower half of the nose. The tiny blood vessels in these areas enlarge (dilate) and become more visible through the skin, appearing like tiny red lines (called telangiectasias). Symptoms include thickening skin, irregular surface nodularities, and enlargement.

Patients

Patients should be advised to avoid known exacerbating factors, such as hot or cold temperatures, wind, hot drinks, caffeine, exercise, spicy food, alcohol, emotions, topical products that irritate the skin and decrease the barrier, and medications that cause flushing. Patients should be encouraged to use a noncomedogenic, high-factor sunscreen when exposed to sunlight and wind. Most patients respond well to long-term topical antibiotic treatment.

Acne rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease that affects about 14 million Americans between the age of 30 and 60 and is more common in women than in men. Acne Rosacea may look very similar to Acne Vulgaris and often causes confusion. Also, the International Rosacea Foundation has excellent information about rosacea, adult rosacea, acne rosacea, ocular rosacea and many rosacea treatments. A diet rich in multiple essential vitamins and minerals, especially the vitamin "A", has been demonstrated to benefit rosacea and acne rosacea sufferers. Did you know that Acne Rosacea affects the lives of over 16 million North Americans yet the general public is still ignorant of its existence not to mention the fact that it has an easy natural cure.
